Federal agencies that implement the Endangered Species Act (ESA) are tasked with evaluating the effects of pesticides on imperiled species and their habitat quickly, and often with little environmental data, or taxa-relevant toxicity threshold information. We review the USFWS ESA Section 7 consultation perspective for aquatic herbicide use in the critical habitat of the federally-threatened Delta Smelt (<i>Hypomesus transpacificus)</i> in the San Francisco Estuary and suggest opportunities for partnerships to ensure the use of best-available science for future consultations and improved risk assessments for listed species.<br/>
