Chagas disease (CD), also known as American trypanosomiasis, is caused  by the protozoan parasite Trypanosoma cruzi that is transmitted through various species of hematophagous reduviid insects (kissing bugs) mainly in endemic areas. Other important mechanisms of infection which occur mainly in nonendemic areas, include blood transfusion, organ transplantation and oral ingestion
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) , CD is classified as Neglected Tropical Disease; WHO also estimates that approximately 8 million people are infected with T. cruzi worldwide, with almost 100 million at risk of infection. Furthermore, 2000 deaths per year can be attributed to CD, making it a serious public health issue. Benznidazole and nifurtimox, both developed over 40 years ago, are currently the only drugs available for treating CD. Side effects are fairly common with both drugs and tend to be more frequent and more severe with increasing age thus it is necessary to search for new anti-Chagas drugs
