Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been drawing increasing interest as one of the most versatile materials with permanent porosity, in comparison with other porous inorganic materials such as silica and zeolites. MOFs are defined as bi- or three-dimensional coordination polymers with empty cavities and are built from multitopic ligands coordinated to metallic ions or clusters by strong covalent interactions. This class of compounds usually exhibits unique properties such as high crystallinity, high surface area, good thermal stability and the possibility of chemical functionalization. In addition, luminescent properties can also be introduced to MOFs if they are synthesized with lanthanide (Ln) ions as metallic centers (LnMOFs). Other potential applications can be exploited for LnMOFs, such as in luminescent sensors, biosensors, biomarkers, light emitting devices, among others. In this context, this work started with the preparation of a 2D Layered MOF (1) sample based on trivalent europium ion and 2,6-pyridinedicarboxilate linker (PDC), with posterior exfoliation of the bulk MOF to produce 2D MOF nanosheets. The work continued with the studies on the potential application of the samples for luminescent sensing of nitro compounds in solution. The detection is based on the efficient luminescence quenching of 1 in the presence of nitroaromatic compounds. Such a selective luminescence suppression effect makes compound 1 a potential luminescent sensor of picric acid, an explosive compound, in methanol solution. Thus, this research proposes a fast-response luminescent sensing of picric acid.
