The Furcraea spp plants, commonly known as fique plants, are endemic of Colombia and traditionally used to extract hard fibers for crafts, cord, ropes, sacks, and packaging materials manufacture. Fique fibers are composed of cellulose, lignin, and hemicellulose. In previous studies, we demonstrated that cellulose in fique fibers can act as a matrix for the synthesis of transition metal oxides nanoparticles.  The resultant bionanocomposite materials can act as heterogeneous catalysts for oxidation of organic pollutants in textile wastewater. However, the effectiveness of the bionanocomposites is limited mainly because of nanoparticle leaching from the fiber surface. In this contribution we test the effect of introducing amine groups on the surface of fique fibers on the stability of the cellulose-MnO2 nanoparticles composite.
