Herein we describe the homogeneous catalytic hydrogenation of biomass derived furanic aldehydes using low loadings of PNP transition metal complexes under mild conditions. The systems demonstrate excellent catalytic activity and selectivity towards furfuryl alcohols while retaining the furan units intact. Importantly, these highly selectively hydrogenated products are very promising candidates as platform chemicals in the sustainable industry.
