As an emerging and highly innovative additive manufacturing process, 4D printing is based on, but extends beyond the capacity of 3D printing. 4D printed structure can dynamically change over time when exposed to a predetermined stimulus. Our lab aims to develop innovative 4D bioprinting platforms that can provide a perfect self-morphing feature for controlling stem cell functions and improving complex tissue and organ regeneration. Our pioneering work in designing novel 4D bioprinting smart biomaterials has shown great promise for various neural and cardiac tissue regeneration. For instance, we have discovered a multi-responsive smart structure triggered by both solvent immersion and temperature modulation using a smart natural polymer for a dual 4D bioprinting study. A unique integrated design of stress-induced structure transformation and shape memory effect was proposed for the first time to achieve a 4D+ or 5D concept. Moreover, recently we created novel light-triggered 4D bioprinted tissue constructs via incorporating nanomaterials into our stimuli-responsive smart materials. A proof-of-concept 4D bioprinted brain model was fabricated and the resultant construct exhibited a dynamically and remotely controllable transformation triggered by light in a spatiotemporal manner, which promoted excellent neural stem cell growth and differentiation. Our studies have shown the great potential of 4D bioprinting for the development of multi-responsive smart heart tissues and advanced biomedical devices.

4D Bioprinting for Complex Tissue and Organ Regeneration
