In this presentation, we highlight some recent applications of turbulence and fluid mechanics research to a subject of considerable current interest: wind power. With the continued growth of global wind power production, ongoing efforts to increase the power density of wind power plants (MW/km2) are becoming more important. Recent empirical studies have shown that wind plant power generation can be increased by turbine yawing and tilting. The transverse force induced by yawing and tilting produces  observable  deflection and generates a counter-rotating vortex pair that persists many rotor diameters downstream. In this study, we investigate the fate of this counter-rotating vortex pair as it interacts with atmospheric boundary layer turbulence and the ground. A theoretical model is developed directly from vortex dynamics to predict the evolution of the shed circulation, vortex core size, and maximum vorticity and compared to large eddy simulations of yawed wind turbines in the atmospheric boundary layer.
