A Science Gateway is a web presence meant for scientific research and education.  Gateways primarily support 3 types of activities: i) collaboration in groups, ii) providing access to expensive resources such as high performance computers, rendering servers, data sets, and instruments and iii) publishing resources and online applications that may be used by massive audiences to access those resources.  When seeking to put scientific resources online using a gateway, several options are possible:  i)‚Äúgoing it alone,‚Äù ii) finding another gateway with a related topical focus, or iii) using gateway building frameworks created by those who have created many production level gateways.  Choices made early in the process impact the construction and ongoing operational cost of the gateway, and therefore have a significant effect on sustainability.

The Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) is a resource available to federally funded projects to assist researchers with determining the best way to establish a gateway presence.  The SGCI maintains a catalog of over 500 existing gateways, some of which may be suitable to the materials science community, and is versed in existing gateway technologies which may accelerate efforts at constructing new gateways.  The nanoHUB for instance accesses the OpenKIM repository and can run simulations through an API.  Such examples show that today there is very little reason to recreate capabilities that already exist in the large number of gateways available currently.  The SGCI services consist of sustainability planning (messaging, user identification, value proposition definition, usability analysis, among others), and technical support where the SGCI can place a developer on a project development team at 25% FTE for 0.5-1 year, or an intern for a summer or semester long project.  The SGCI also can act as a more involved partner at higher levels of effort if the project is willing to co-fund the SGCI developers.

The Virtual Technical Meeting of the Society of Engineering Science 2020 is the first fully virtual meeting of the SES community to envision and connect during the hiatus created by Covid-19, providing a platform for the exchange of ideas, and to showcase the latest research in the field of engineering science.
