In this work, we studied how to choose the structural parameters of a typical multistable mechanical metamaterial to achieve the best mechanical properties within a restricted volume. We combined theoretical modeling and numerical simulations to discuss the effects of the geometric parameters of the multistable metastructure on its mechanical properties. For unit cells with the same maximum strain during deflection, we can obtain the largest peak force and best energy absorption performance by adjusting its geometrical parameters. Furthermore, two different multilayer structures were fabricated by a high-resolution 3D printer and the relationships between compression force and displacement under the loading-unloading process were obtained both numerically and experimentally. The results showed that the structure with Q=3.6 has better performance than the structure with Q=6 on both the properties of vibration isolation and energy absorption. This work has a guiding effect on the design of a variety of multistable structures, especially those used for some specific engineering problems that have restrictions on structural volume.
