As a category of lightweight porous material, triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) structures have been utilized in a many engineering applications. The mechanical performances of TPMS architectures could be tuned by adjusting geometry parameters. Comparing to strut-based lattice structures, TPMS structures showed superior mechanical performances. In this research, Schwarz Primitive surface (P-TPMS) has been studied. The influence on elastic modulus and ultimate strength of two geometry parameters, structural porosity and shell thickness, has been discussed separately. In addition, an enhanced design method, based on local shell thickening, is proposed to obtain a lightweight structure with superior mechanical properties. A comparison between primary and enhanced architectures is made by using experimental characterization and finite element analysis (FEA). It has been shown that the enhanced structure renders higher relative elastic modulus and ultimate strength than original architecture. Moreover, P-TPMS structural models are reconstructed from micro X-ray tomography (Œº-CT) images and compared with as-designed models. The comparison of experimental and FEA results indicates that the proposed enhanced design method is effective and reliable to obtain shell-based lattices with better mechanical properties.
