In our contribution we discuss the primary bifurcation (wrinkling) response of single-
and multi-layered magnetorheological elastomer (MRE) film-substrate systems under combined in-plane biaxial precompression and transverse magnetic field. 
We employ a recent continuum model for the response of moderately soft MREs that features the volume fraction of magnetic particles as an explicit parameter. This allows us to directly study influence of this important quantity. 
The analysis itself combines in-plane Fourier expansions and with a finite element scheme for out-of-plane components. This versatile approach provides us with the flexibility to study a number of multilayered film-substrate topologies. 
For our talk we pick out three sets of results. First we present a general characterization of the effect of biaxial precompression and the interesting behavior around equi-biaxial precompression states. After that we consider the novel case of a MRE film bonded to a MRE substrate for various particle volume fractions in either layer. We report significant and sharp changes in the critical wave number magnitudes by only minor changes in the precompression from which we identify two bifurcation regimes.
The third set of results is concerned with the minimization of the critical magnetic field for a given precompression. For that purpose we evaluated the critical field in a data-mining exercise for a wide range of topologies and parameters values. By that we found the simplest film-substrate topologies to be optimal among setups with comparable magnetic and mechanical properties.
