Fifty years ago, in 1960, Glenn T. Seaborg, as Chair of the CHEM Study Steering Committee, helped initiate work leading to this program's development, including persuading George Pimentel to serve as CHEM Study textbook editor. Initial writing teams convened in June, 1960, and, remarkably, completed a first-draft text and laboratory manual for 1960-61 classroom testing. Looking back in 1969, Seaborg regarded his contributions to this project as �among the most important and rewarding� of that decade. His numerous contributions to education also included serving on the National Committee on Excellence in Education that issued the influential 1983 report, A Nation at Risk; helping establish content standards for California's schools; conceiving the idea for, helping establish, and serving as Chair of Lawrence Hall of Science; advocacy of quality science education and working with developing nations regarding it; and teaching freshman chemistry and interacting with school children as a Nobel laureate.
