Samples of microcrystalline cellulose, MCC, combined with 5 or 10% ethyl cellulose and 10% naproxen were granulated, extruded and marumerized into wet sustained release beads.  These wet beads were then exposed to several different drying methods including: freeze-drying, convection oven drying, microwave drying and exposure to four different humidity conditions.  The rate of naproxen release from the MCC/EC bead systems was measured by dissolution methods using a sodium phosphate buffer pH 8.0 as the solvent system.  The control for this experiment was the convection oven dried beads.  The results observed, based on these dissolution studies, suggest that the rate of naproxen release from each MCC/EC dried bead system, either increases, decreases or follows the same release rate as the control sample.  This further suggests that the rate of release of naproxen from each MCC/EC sample depends on the drying method used to dry the wet bead systems.
