An aryl-substituted 1,3-disilacyclobutane, 1-(1,1,3-trimethyl-1,3-disilacyclobutane)-4-trimethylsilyl-benzene, was used to study the UV induced ring-opening polymerization of this novel DSCB monomer. By carrying out FTIR studies on the UV irradiated products, it was determined that this monomer underwent ring-opening to form soluble oligomers, as confirmed by GPC.  NMR spectroscopy showed that the UV-induced RO reaction resulted in linear oligomers, with regular SiCH2Si linkages. EPR spectra demonstrated that there are persistent radicals left after UV-irradiation, suggesting a radical mechanism for the polymerization.
