Electrospinning is an effective strategy to convert technical lignins into sub-micron diameter fibres. In this work we investigate the role of molecular structure and specific intermolecular interactions in the ability to generate electrospun fibres with lignin contents of greater than 99% by weight. To do so we have compared several technical lignins as well as different additives in terms of their electrospinning behaviour and solution rheology. The purpose of this work is to generate a fundamental understanding of the mechanism of fibre formation in electrospinning of lignin-based systems and relate the findings to the structure-property relationships of lignin-based carbon fibres.
