2,2,4,4,6-Pentachlorocyclohex-5-en-1,3-dione, commonly called pentachlororesorcinol or PCR, is an important model compound of the humic acids. Research has previously shown that PCR reacts with the chloramines (NH2Cl and NHCl2), which are chlorinating agents used for the disinfection of drinking water, by an ion-radical mechanism. This poster presents an investigation of the reaction of PCR with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) in methanol, comparing the products with those from the reaction of PCR with the chloramines in methanol. The reaction of PCR with HOCl gives several different, major products. We have identified the structures of many of these products using mass spectrometry (EI and CI) and gas chromatography-infrared spectroscopy. The mechanisms of the reaction of PCR with HOCl and with the chloramines are compared.
