An LCMS-ELSD chemical investigation  of the hexanes soluble crude extract generated from the marine sponge Cacospongia mycofijiensis has pinpointed a new diterpene of the unique aignopsanes class, aignopsanoic acid C (1), along with the known metabolites aignopsanoic acid A (2), methyl aignopsanoate (3) and iso aignopsanoic acid A (4). The structure of 1 was elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR along with high resolution mass spectroscopic data. Aignopsanoic acid C (1) is the first aignopsane to be devoid of the exocyclic double bond. Previously compounds 2-4 exhibited a range of activities against T. brucei, the parasite responsible for sleeping sickness, based on the orientation of the E/Z double bond. The cytoxicity structure activity relationships of compounds 1-4, tested against a panel of murine and  human solid tumor cell lines, will now be reported.
