The navel orangeworm is responsible for causing several million dollars worth of damage to almonds, pistachios and walnut orchards in California.  Successful and effective methods to combat this agricultural pest have eluded researchers for more than two decades.  Collaborators at the USDA-ARS Plant Mycotoxin Research group in California have identified a tricyclic natural product that might possess the required biological activity to act as a possible kairomone.  The objective of this project is to design a synthesis of the target molecule and provide sufficient quantities to our collaborators for biological evaluation.  Investigation of four possible synthetic routes is currently being pursued.  The primary considerations in each route are flexibility, efficiency and stereocontrol.
