Low molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are compounds that are able to form gels in organic solvents or aqueous solutions. They are typically classified into two categories: organogelators and hydrogelators. These compounds have potential applications as advanced materials in the biomedical fields, including drug delivery, enzyme immobilization, and tissue engineering. Previously, we have found that acyl derivatives of 4,6-benzylidene acetal protected glucose 1 are good organo/hydrogelators. In order to understand the structural influence of the sugar headgroup on gelation, we synthesized a series of esters using the headgroup 2 and screened their gelation in a few solvents. The synthesis and evaluation of the gelation of this new series of compounds will be presented here.
