Iron oxide nanoparticles have found extensive use as contrast agents for Magnetic Resonance Imaging due to their high transverse relaxivity.  However, their current design does not readily enable functionalization with biomolecules.  Herein we present a novel and robust synthesis of highly magnetic Fe3O4@Au. These core-shell assemblies comprise an intermediate phosphate layer acting as a magnetic insulator. The importance of this organic layer in preserving the magnetism of the core-shell material is demonstrated. The development of these gold-coated nanoparticles opens up many possibilities for the design of contrast agents.
