We describe an inexpensive sensitive (LOD 1 microgram/L) gas-phase chemiluminescence (GPCL) based analyzer for arsenic that is manually operated. We also describe a flow injection based instrument in which arsenic is reduced to arsine electrochemically in a flow-through graphite-body electrochemical cell. The latter approach provides even better LODs and the only consumable chemical (that can be significantly recycled) is dilute sulfuric acid. Arsine formed by electroreduction reacts with ozone generated from air. The reaction is carried out atop a photomultiplier tube and produces intense chemiluminescence. This is the greenest approach to measure arsenic described to date.Results obtained in Bangladesh by SONO diagnostic laboratory with parallel stripping voltammetric determination will be discussed.
