There are many organometallic compounds in which an indenyl group can substitute for a Cp ring without greatly changing the stability of the complex.  Despite the vast number of known manganocenes, indenyl compounds of manganese(II) had been absent from the literature until recently.  This is partly a consequence of their extreme oxygen sensitivity and their high spin d5 electron configurations.   Contributing to this reactivity is the conformational flexibility of the indenyl-manganese(II) bond; ?1 to ?5 coordination modes have all been documented.  (Indenyl)manganese(II) halides exemplify this oxygen sensitivity by forming blue superoxo complexes at low temperature and exceptionally low O2 concentrations (< 2 ppm).  The synthesis, structures, and reactivity with trace amounts of oxygen will be presented with supporting density functional theory calculations.
