The synthesis of the ceramic laser host material, yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) using the low-temperature Pechini method was studied as a function of calcination temperature and time.  Powders prepared by calcination of the product obtained by polymerization of the mixed metalcitrate complexes with ethylene glycol were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction.  Results showed that phase-pure YAG was obtained with a very small particle size suitable for preparation of ceramic components.  Doping the ceramic by addition of neodymium and other rare earth ions to the reaction mixture was investigated.  Preliminary characterization of the optical properties of the doped materials was performed using absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy.
