Previous research has shown that tetraazaporphyrins (TAPs) with different peripheral groups have unique metal redox properties. The purpose of this research is to determine the possible relationship between ring strain of the peripheral groups and the aromaticity / redox potential of various iron TAPs. The TAPs, synthesized via the procedure of Wong and Arnold, bear fused bicyclohexyl and bicyclopentyl rings on the � pyrrolic positions of the TAP macrocycle. The TAPs are characterized by NMR, IR, MS, and cyclic voltammetry. The redox potentials of the four TAPs are compared and conclusions drawn upon the observed relationships.
