Real world problem solving is a core goal of chemistry education. New ways of assessing student problem solving in real world contexts would further this goal therefore, student problem solving under the conditions of an undefined problem space was investigated. These undefined problem spaces were developed within interactive multimedia exercises (IMMEX), using real world scenarios. Undergraduate non-majors were given problem sets involving chemical properties and Lewis structures and compound identification using wet chemical tests and spectral analysis, which were related to upcoming labs. Student problem solving methods were analyzed and any changes over time were noted. Student difficulties and solutions to obstacles to implementation are discussed.
