Doped alkaline earth chalcogenide (AEE) materials,also known as Lenard Phosphors, have shown to be suitable for infrared-sensitive and electroluminescent applications. Recently, AEE nanomaterials have gained  interest for light emitting diodes and bioimaging applications. Since there are few reports concerning nanoscaled AEE synthesis and optic properties, we have developed a new solution route.  A family of AEE and SrSe:RE nanoparticles were synthesized using a solution precipitation or solvothermal route. The nanoparticles were prepared from the stoichiometric reaction between the following metal alkoxide and chalcogenide precursors: Ca(DBP)2(THF)2; Sr5(�4-O)(�3-ONep)4(�-ONep)4(HONep)(py)4; [Ba2(�3-ONep)(�-ONep)2(ONep)(HONep)3(py)]2; [Dy(�-ONep)2(ONep)4]4;[Tb(�-ONep)2(ONep)]4 (where ONep = OCH2CMe3, DBP = OC6H3(C(CH3)3)2-2,6, THF = tetrahydrofuran,  py =pyridine), S(Si(CH3)3)2;  Se  or Te. The precursors were heated trioctylphosphine oxide and trioctylphosphine at 400 �C (2h). The resulting materials were found to be crystalline 5-20 nm particles by TEM and PXRD. The luminescence properties of SrSe:RE (RE = Tb3+, Dy3+) were also investigated. Full details on the synthesis and characterization will be discussed.
