In this paper, the Fe/iron carbide promoted K/�-Mo2C catalyst was prepared by co-carbonization and two-step carbonization method respectively. The catalysts were characterized by N2 physisorption, XRD, XPS, and SEM. The catalytic results for higher alcohols synthesis showed that the catalyst prepared by two-steps carbonization exhibited appreciated higher alcohols synthesis performance. For the two-steps carbonization, the higher activity and higher alcohols (C2+OH) selectivity was enhanced remarkably than that of co-carbonization method. Combined with the XRD, SEM and XPS results, the new �K-Fe-Mo-C� species in two-step carbonization catalyst is attributed to the active sites on higher alcohols synthesis. Furthermore, the XPS results suggested that production of alcohols appeared to be relevant to the present of Mo4+ species, whereas the Mo2+ and species on the surface of �-Mo2C-based catalyst was closely associated with the formation of hydrocarbons.
