Exposing graphene (GO) oxide to a high intensity light, results in a deoxygenation reaction to yield graphitic carbon. Nitrogen absorption measurements indicated a surface area up to 980 m2/g, while the hydrogen gas uptake of 0.5 wt % was measured at 77 K. In addition, XPS indicates a significant increase in intensity of the C=C signal, and XRD analysis shows a single peak at 26.4� 2?, confirming conversion to graphitic carbon. Using thin films of GO and a mask it is possible to control areas of exposure, which may hold promise in the future of conductive and insulating GO-based electronics. The other application of flash-initiated reaction involves dispersing graphite oxide in fuel and using it as an ignition initiator, which would allow simultaneous ignition of multiple nucleation sites. The proposed type of �distributed ignition� has applications in liquid fuel rockets and in high efficiency homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engines.
