Novel amino cellulose derivatives were synthesized by two paths; namely by Click chemistry applying 6-deoxy-6-azido cellulose and amino groups containing dendrons with a focal triple bond and by Vilsmeier-Haack-type reaction of tosyl-N,N-dimethylacetiminium salt formed in the course of tosylation of cellulose in ionic liquids. Biofunctional surfaces were prepared by either embedding 6-deoxy-6-(1,2,3-triazolo)-4-polyamidoamine cellulose in a cellulose acetate matrix or even by heterogeneous functionalization of deoxy-azido cellulose film with the dendron applying copper-catalyzed Huisgen reaction [1]. Ring opening of lactams like N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone was exploited for the preparation of novel cationic esters of cellulose; the reaction proceeds very efficiently applying ionic liquids as reaction medium.
