It is often difficult when collecting data to simultaneouslycapture both what was said and what was drawn by the research participant. Withrecent advances in technology, a pen originally designed for college students'note taking has transformed the process of data collection.  The LivescribeTM PulseTMsmartpen in conjunction with the LivescribeTM dot paper captureswhat is drawn while recording what is said during the interview. A discussionof the practicality and implementation of the LivescribeTM PulseTMsmartpen in the collection of data on students' understanding of enzymecatalysis and Lewis structures with expanded octets will be discussed.
