We have developed a novel synthetic approach towards various heterocycles starting from readily available alkynes and alkenes. We have demonstrated that high-yielding Ru-catalysed oxidation of alkynes affords diketones which can be transformed either to pyrazines directly or to thiazoles, imidazols and indols via acyloins employing regioselective reduction by zinc in acidic media. The synthesis of heterocycles is being used to prepare medicinal chemistry arrays for drug discovery and can be valuable for synthetic organic chemists.
