The longitudinal unzipping of nanotube to form graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) was recently discovered. This method offered a new way to produce GNRs in large scale.  The high surface area, high aspect ratio, and interesting electronic properties of GNRs render those promising candidates for many applications, such as composite materials, field-effect transistors, transparent electrode materials, hydrogen storage materials and semiconductor materials. In this work, we discussed the covalent functionalization of chemically converted GNRs. By attaching GNRs with anionic and cationic functional group, the new functionalized graphene nanoribbons (f-GNRs) were successfully prepared. Furthermore, we discussed the applications of f-GNRs in thin film assembly and field-effect transistor. The ultrathin full GNRs thin film was prepared by layer by layer assembly technique.  The thin film field effect transistor was also successfully fabricated and characterized.
