Micro- and nanostructured polymeric materials have been actively studied for applications ranging from dry adhesives, memory devices, and anti-fouling surfaces. Given that magnetic nanoparticles are attractive due to their excellent electrical, optical, and magnetic properties, we have prepared microstructured polymeric magnetic composites to control the physical movement of magnetic posts using an applied external magnetic field. Composite polymer-inorganic nanoparticles, MnFe2O4, have been initially encapsulated in a polymer matrix by miniemulsion polymerization. We evaluated the magnetic properties of these composite nanoparticles; coercivity, hysteresis loop, field-cooled magnetization and zero-field magnetization. In addition, we evaluated mechanical properties, such as Young's modulus, tensile strength, and elongation characteristics of both the cross-linked matrix and the composite magnetic polymers. The poster will highlight the results of the studies related to the physical and mechanical properties of the composite materials.
