Cisplatin [Pt(NH3)2Cl2] is a platinum based chemotherapy drug that has been in wide use for a number of years to treat various types of cancers. Several methods have been proposed to increase the cytotoxicity and efficacy of cisplatin. Combination therapy with flavonoids like quercetin is one such approach. Cisplatin works by forming adducts with DNA to inhibit mitosis. This study concentrates on the DNA-cisplatin-quercetin system. Using techniques like QCM (Quartz Crystal Microbalance), UV-Vis spectroscopy, I study how cisplatin and quercetin interact with each other in the bulk phase, and whether this affects their interaction with DNA. Cisplatin and quercetin show indications of forming a complex, which holds implications for how they interact individually with DNA. A fundamental study that specifically addresses the nature of their reaction with each other can shed light on the reasons for the biological behavior of these compounds in the cell.
