Discreet first-row transition metal complexes have been covalently immobilized on indium tin oxide (ITO), a conducting oxide material, and electrochemically characterized.  A two-step modular strategy is used to covalently bind a terpyridine ligand to the ITO surface through copper-catalyzed alkyne-azide coupling.  The immobilized ligand is repeatedly loaded with and emptied of Fe, as monitored by voltammetry of the surface-immobilized complex.  The immobilized terpyridine forms a series of mixed-ligand Fe complexes with various bipyridines, and the resulting complexes have a range of distinct Fe(III/II) redox potentials.  Modification of the surface-immobilized Fe complex reduces the overpotential for outer-sphere hydrogen peroxide oxidation.  These results demonstrate using synthetic modification to rationally modify the redox potential of a covalently immobilized mixed-ligand complex.
