The catalytic conversion of CO2 toliquid fuels is a critical goal that would positively impact the global carbonbalance.  To date, catalysts for theconversion of CO2 into more energetic and reduced forms have notbeen adequate for commercial application. In our efforts to synthesize a better catalyst for the reduction of CO2to carbon monoxide we began with a previously reported catalyst.  The catalyst, Re(bipy)(CO)3Cl(bipy = 2,2'- bipyridine) reduced CO2 to CO with good stability, butrelatively slow kinetics.  Here we reporta simple modification of this catalyst to Re(bipy-tBu)(CO)3Cl(bipy-tBu = 4,4'-di-tert-butyl-2,2'-bipyridine)that led to much faster kinetics, with a second order rate constant of 1000 M-1s-1,without loss of stability.  The catalyticdata for the new complex, IR-SEC data, and results from mechanistic studies arealso reported.
