Presented are new investigations for converting CO2 to CO by centering the chemical transformation at ligand moieties on anionic metal complexes rather than directly at the metal center.  The overall cycle involves three key steps: CO2 binding/activation at a terminal ligand, deoxygenation of the bound CO2 group, and finally, evolution of CO with concomitant regeneration of the starting anionic complex.  To date, we have demonstrated the feasibility of this idea by using a terminal nitride anion complex of niobium, NaNNb(NtBuAr)3, as the mediating platform. Building upon this precedent, recent investigations have focused on developing alternative platforms to carry out the same overall transformation while improving on some of the shortcomings of the original system (e.g. complex degradation, niobium oxo formation, etc.). Work to be discussed includes the synthesis and characterization of new niobium complexes using bidentate anilide and/or monodentate aryloxide groups as ancillary ligands, and reactivity studies of titanium oxo anion complexes with CO2.
