Siderophores are commonly produced by bacteria to acquire environmental iron.  Recent evidence in our group indicates that siderophores have an affinity for other metals and may play a role in bacterial attachment to metal surfaces, leading to the formation of biofilms, which allow microorganisms to adhere to surfaces with devastating consequences in both medical and industrial settings.  Pyoverdine-like siderophores produced by Pseudomonas strains isolated from cave environments were isolated and characterized spectroscopically.  Graphite thermal analysis was utilized to determine the affinity of these siderophores for different metals that may be present in these systems.  Siderophore-metal interactions were also evaluated using UV-Vis and fluorescence in conjunction with EDTA to correlate metal ion affinity.   Analytical methods to evaluate the mechanisms of survival in stressed environments will also be discussed.
