The compound, 8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulfonic acid (HQS), produces fluorescent complexes that are water-soluble with a wide variety of metal ions. Of particular interest was the usefulness of the HQS-metal complexes for quantitative analysis of metal ions by fluorescence spectroscopy. Throughout the study, the effects of temperature, time, reagent concentration, and pH were used to determine a linear detection range, for both Mg2+ and Zn2+.  Additionally, the quenching affects of Fe3+, an ion known to affect fluorescent complexes, were examined.  The initial data suggests that the concentration of both Mg2+ and Zn2+ can be determined within �10% at concentrations approaching 20�M.
