Because the supply of secondary physical science teachers is of critical concern in many states, the success of UT-Austin's UTeach program at fostering student exploration of secondary STEM teaching careers has attracted national attention. The UKanTeach program is part of a national experiment to determine how replicating a key element of the UTeach strategy -- focusing teacher education curricula on the pedagogical content knowledge required to succeed in secondary mathematics or science teaching -- affects the number of individuals entering preservice programs and the qualifications of program graduates. Characteristics of UKanTeach being studied include: 1) the quality and influence of frequent field experiences, 2) student success in the praxis examination for licensure and 3) the long-term retention of new teachers in STEM teaching. Now at the beginning of its third year of replication, UKanTeach has more than doubled the size of cohorts of preservice secondary science teachers at the University of Kansas.
