In this paper we will describe that the generation of surface-attached polymer networks from polymers carrying photoreactive groups provides a versatile pathway for the functionalization of surfaces. By varying the structure and composition of the polymers used for the coating, surfaces can be realized with well-defined propertiessuch as swelling or wettability. We were able to show that these parameters can be effectively used to control the adhesion of cells on surfaces by either promotingor disabling the adsorption of proteins. Combining this approach for coating generation with means of surface microstructuring (e.g. photolithography, �-contactprinting and others) it is possible to generate microsystems that may be used for the investigation of cells in lab-on-a-chip formats.
