The title compound, Ru(H2O)62+catalytically isomerizes allyl functionalities in water and therefore serves as a potentially useful synthetic tool for unmasking protecting groups.  As such, various deprotection transformations were screened in which allyl ethers and allyl esters were unmasked in water to the corresponding alcohols and carboxylic acids by Ru(H2O)62+(7% loading).  These substrates included allylgalactose and 2'-O-allyluridine.  This �green� deprotection strategy was investigated with regard to the mechanism in which the allyl ether to vinyl ether process was seen followed by the hydrolysis to the alcohol and propionaldehye.  Finally, the water-soluble (COD) Ru(H2O)2+ complex was also investigated as a potential catalyst for the deprotection of homoallyl ethers.
