The ability to quickly recognize and characterize chiral centers is extremely beneficial in numerous areas, including molecular biology, natural products, and pharmaceutical drug development. Luminescent Ln(III)-containing complexes exhibiting circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), have been shown to be promising candidates for these types of studies due to CPL's concentration independence and specificity for the chirality about the metal center.  In an effort to increase the number and variety of these types of probes, a number of derivatives of dipicolinic acid have been synthesized and complexed with Eu(III), Tb(III), and Gd(III).  These ligands and subsequent complexes have been fully characterized in terms of pKas, stability constants, quantum yields, and lifetimes.  The next step in this development is to associate these probes with an assortment of simple amino acids. This should help elucidate different mechanisms of association between a chirality of interest and the Ln(III)-probe.
