Cox17 is a eukaryotic protein containing a C-terminal coiled-coil-helix-coiled-coil-helixdomain which carries copper to SCO proteins, which have a thioredoxin fold. The copper transfer may be associated with a redox process involving the copper binding Cys residues. Cox17 is unfolded in the cytoplasm, enters the mitochondria and it is then trapped into the mitochondrial intermembrane space through an induced folding mechanism involving the thioredoxin-unrelated oxidoreductase Mia40, which has a very similar fold. The entire oxidation chain ending in O2 is being characterized.
