The chemical nature of the organic matter sequestered in organic rich sediments has been studied for many years, however only about half has been characterised on the molecular level.  A recent analytical tool for investigating the molecular nature of the sediment organic matter is Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass  spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS).  Sediments from Mangrove Lake, Bermuda have been studied using this technique, in particular examining the N-containing compounds identified.  The extraction method used prior to FT-ICR-MS analysis greatly affects the level of information obtained using this method.  This study compares the use of several different extraction methods for FT-ICR-MS sediment analysis and highlights the N-containing compounds which vary between them.
