Recently, we found that a color of poly(styrene-styrenesulfonic acid) (PSSA) changed from white to reddish-yellow by a thermal treatment. Since a color change is able to be related to some degradation of PSSA, a thermal analysis and an electron magnetic resonance spectroscopy were carried out on the sample specimens revealing the white and the reddish-yellow colors. As a results, we show that a SO3-� radical can be generated in the process of thermal treatment of the sample, which also accompanies the change of the copolymer color from white to reddish-yellow.
