Rhodium(III) complexes are good electron acceptors having potential applications incatalysis and modification of biomolecules potentially functioning as antitumordrugs. Reported here are metal complexes which couple one ruthenium polyazinelight absorber bridged to cis-RhIIICl2center through a dpp bridging ligand. The mixed-metal bimetallic complexes,[(TL)2Ru(dpp)RhCl2(TL')](PF6)3 (TL andTL' = polyazine terminal ligand (phen, Me2phen, Ph2phen),phen = 1,10-phenanthroline, Me2phen =4,7-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline, ph2phen =4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline and dpp = 2,3-bis(2-pyridyl)-pyrazine ) aresynthesized by using a building block method. The resultant complexes have beencharacterized by spectral and analytical techniques such as nuclear magneticresonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. These complexes are efficient lowenergy light absorbers and have complex redox properties as a result ofenergetically close frontier orbitals. They possess an emissive 3MLCTexcited state and photocleave and photobind DNA through an oxygen independentpathway. Due to the variation of the terminal ligands, these [(TL)2Ru(dpp)RhCl2(TL')](PF6)3complexes show different redox, photophysical and photochemicalproperties.
