In an attempt to understand molecular structure-packingrelationships, we designed scaffold 1. Tetraalkoxy-substituted compounds 1 are ordered by three independentintermolecular interactions. Thermochemical studies revealed that the freezingpoint decreases with alkyl chain length. We postulated that hydrogen bonding isthe last interaction to be lost during heating and the first to be formedduring cooling.  If so, alkyl chainmotions must make a significant contribution to the entropic component of thefree energy. Results from solution-phase association studies ofthese compounds will be presented.
