Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) and laser-induced breakdown spectrometry (LIBS) were applied to elemental mapping of wide range of solid samples. Methods of acquisition of 2D elemental distribution in sample sections were developed for both for inorganic and organic materials encompassing rocks, uroliths, archaeological and palaeontological objects, materials for nuclear reactor technology, biological tissues, and gels after separation of analytes by gel electrophoresis. Quantification of elemental distribution in such materials is not straightforward due to lack of suitable calibration and reference materials, but in some cases qualitative patterns or maps in relative signal scale may represent valuable information. LA-ICP-MS and LIBS may be complementary techniques for elemental mapping. LA-ICP-MS mostly surpasses LIBS devices in limits of detection, however, usual LIBS instrumentation is mostly less expensive and exhibits lower operational costs. In this work,commercial LA-ICP-MS (UP 213 New Wave & Agilent 7500 ce) and a laboratory-made LIBS device were used and in some cases compared.The authors kindly acknowledge the Czech Science Foundation for financial support of the projects no.
