In the 1980's, f element complexes of the metalated pentamethylcyclopentadienyl �tuck-in� ligand, [?5:?1-C5Me4CH2]2-,  were identified from kinetic studies as key intermediates in alkane C-H bond activation reactions.  Although X-ray crystallographic data were obtained on transition metal tuck-in complexes, no structures of f element tuck-in complexes were found during the next 25 years.  Recently, the first example of an f element tuck-in complex was reported, the uranium tuck-in tuck-over hydride, (?5-C5Me5)[?5:?1:?1-C5Me3(CH2)2]U(�-H)2U(?5-C5Me5)2. Surprisingly, in the last year four new types of f element tuck-in complexes have been synthesized and structurally characterized.  In addition, an extensive series of silyl tuck-in compounds involving the [?5:?1-C5Me4SiMe2CH2]2- ligand has been discovered. The synthesis, structure, and reactivity of these complexes will be described.
